Those of you who know me, know that I am not a big hand sanitizer person. In fact, I get annoyed when people try to force my kids to use hand sanitizer when there are perfectly good sinks with soap and clean water available for hand washing. My reasoning is two fold. One - I don't think we should try to constantly eliminate all bacteria, as our bodies have immune systems for a reason. And more so number two - I hate the toxic ingredients in most hand sanitizers.
I was interested in trying out Prefense because it is a very different kind of hand sanitizer. Most importantly to me, it contains no alcohol, and is totally non-toxic. It does not contain Triclosan, the typical active ingredient in most sanitizers (that has been linked to a host of environmental and health concerns). The absence of alcohol creates a sanitizer that is actually soothing to the hands, rather than drying.
Beyond the ingredients, it also functions differently than hand sanitizers I've used before. Prefense provides 24 hour protection (up to 10 hand washings) through a Silica complex, AMOSILQ - which adheres to skin, and offers a proactive antibacterial barrier. Because Prefense only needs to be applied once a day, it also becomes very cost effective, at around $.08 per day (compared with approximately $1.20 with the same amount of protection through alcohol hand sanitizers).
I think this makes Prefense a great option for the situations when you may not have access to handwashing when you'd really like to. I'm looking forward to bringing this with us when we travel to Africa in a few months to adopt our child. Travelling can create lots of opportunities to encounter new germs, in a time when the immune system is already stretched. Beyond that, I'm not sure what the availability of adequate hand washing opportunities will be when we are in Africa. I'll be happy to bring along some Prefense!
We're not an everyday, everywhere, hand sanitizing family. But I have been carrying Prefense with me, and I've found a few situations where I've used it on the kids and myself. I feel much more comfortable using Prefense than traditional, alcohol based hand sanitizers. I don't even own a traditional hand sanitizer, but I'll be happy to keep Prefense on hand. And like I just mentioned, I'll definitely be bringing some along with us for our upcoming travels. I'm glad that I won't have to bring a ton of it either, since one application lasts all day.
You can purchase Prefense products directly from their website.
Prefense has offered to give one of YOU a big 8oz Prefense which offers 640 applications. With one spray lasting all day, that one bottle of Prefense could potentially last one user almost 2 years!
